A person was assassinated in New York.
I care very much that he was killed, especially that it was a brazen, assassination-style killing.
I also care that the news article that I read the day it happened refused to call it an assassination, even though that was clearly what it was. It bothered me that I couldn’t figure out why they would do that. What’s wrong with calling a spade a spade?
I read somewhere that the killer ran up to the fallen body of the victim to viciously pump more bullets into him as he lay on the ground. This bothered me greatly.
I noticed that the victim was the CEO of something or other, and I read more closely and saw that the company he ran was United Health Care. I recognized the name of the company as the name of a company that I recognized.
The victim was attending some such convention at some such hotel. I don’t remember those details and I don’t care anyway.
I saw a security photo of the killer in a hoodie and noticed that he had curly hair and wore a hoodie.
I didn’t care at all about the killer’s race (though I noticed that he is white), gender (though I noticed that he appeared to be male), politics, religion, hair color, eye color, etc., except as clues that the police might collect to identify and apprehend the killer and bring him to justice.
I only care about the man’s motive as a courtroom element at his trial.
I care that the killer has a manifesto because that also makes his crime an act of terrorism.
Someone showed me his manifesto, but I don’t care what it says. I don’t know what it says, and I didn’t read it. A murder shouldn’t amplify a murderer’s opinion above yours or mine. When it does, it kicks another brick out of the structure of civilization. Can you imagine what the world would be like if everybody advertised their cause that way?
I care that the murderer was quickly apprehended by police. This is how such things should always go down.
I think that if the prosecutor can prove he did it, a jury in today’s New York City, tired of the violence, will ignore his cause and see that he is punished. I care very much about that and will watch the case closely when the trial comes.
A person was assassinated. The killer was caught and will stand trial.
Everything else is a distraction.
